ARTIST BIO

Over the years, Janet has pursued her interest in art through various mediums – photography, printmaking, stained glass, music, painting, graphic design, and pottery. She has sought instruction through various workshops and classes. During the 1980's, a job at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine (as a cook) created a desire to attend an art school. Accepted by the Portland School of Art (now MECA) in Portland, Maine, she studied the basics and focused on printmaking. Janet also became an active member of the Portland Camera Club and studied stained glass techniques during this time.

In 1992, Janet and her husband moved from Portland to Naples, Maine and later to Denmark, Maine. More access to the beauty of Maine’s woodlands, lakes and mountains, and a workshop in pastel painting, ignited a spark that continued to grow. Painting plein air (on location out of doors) combined with pastels, which encompass vibrant color, drawing and painting techniques, were the perfect avenue for Janet to pursue her love of art and the outdoors.

She was fortunate to obtain a job in the local print shop where she has worked at graphic design and customer service for the last 28 years. The move to Denmark also created opportunities for Janet to continue to pursue musical expression, an important part of her life since her teens. She became involved in “cabarets” at the local art center,  started a jazz quartet with a fellow artist, and now writes and sings her own songs accompanied by guitar. Janet finds that music and painting go hand in hand – both can be a rewarding expression of ideas and feelings.
